Background and career
Sharif Osman Bin Hadi (born Osman Goni; 1 January 1993 – 18 December 2025) was a Bangladeshi political and cultural activist, teacher and poet. He emerged as a public figure in the period following the student-led uprising of July–August 2024 and was a co-founder and leading spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, a political and cultural organisation formed after the uprising.
Hadi became known for speeches at public demonstrations, television discussions and videos circulated on social media. His campaigning focused on accountability for deaths during the 2024 uprising, opposition to the Awami League’s return to politics and resistance to what he described as Indian dominance over Bangladesh. His direct style attracted a following, particularly among politically engaged younger audiences, while aspects of his rhetoric also attracted criticism.
In 2025, he campaigned as a prospective independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 parliamentary constituency. He was shot in Dhaka on 12 December 2025 and died in a Singapore hospital six days later. His death prompted demonstrations across Bangladesh, a national day of mourning and a large funeral attended by people from a wide range of political backgrounds.
