Background and career

Zaynab bint Ali (Arabic: زَيْنَب بِنْت عَلِيّ, c. 626–682), commonly known as Zaynab al-Kubra, was a grand-daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and the eldest daughter of Ali and Fatima. She is best known for her role in the aftermath of the Battle of Karbala, in which her brother Husayn and most of her male relatives were massacred by the forces of the Umayyad caliph Yazid. Following the battle, Zaynab was among the survivors of Husayn's family who were taken captive by the Umayyad forces.

She played a prominent role in protecting the surviving members of the family and delivering speeches in Kufa and Damascus, condemning the brutal treatment of Husayn and his family. She is venerated particularly in Shia Islam, and the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque in Damascus is attributed as her burial site.

Her conduct after Karbala has made her an important symbol of courage, steadfastness, and resistance in Shia devotional literature and mourning traditions. She is considered to be a symbol of sacrifice, strength, and piety in Islam, and a role model for Muslim women, typifying courage, leadership, and defiance against oppression.
